Wildlander

Those renegades who haunt the eastern forests of Carfdiniad, long after their brethren were routed from those lands, are known as the Wildlanders. Living a semi-nomadic lifestyle, wildlanders live life fishing, hunting, raiding, and traveling.

It is a life of constant danger, not least of all because they dwell largely in lands claimed by the sylvan Carfdiniad empire. The original wildlanders were the descendants of Dwarrow who refused to retreat to the mountains with the rest of their kin, but in the modern day many wildlanders left their mountain homes to live in the forests, as the Dwarrow are a rather adventurous sort.

Wildlanders, even outside of times of war, join up in small independant warbands, raiding sylvan farmsteads and villages or ambushing small groups of sylvan soldiers wherever they can. While they technically own no allegiance to anyone, the Wildlanders join up with the dwarrow armies when open war is declared once more with the Sylvans, lending their considerable expertise to Dwarrow armies.

Abilities and Equipment

Wildlanders fight as individuals without the need for central command. They will often use a mixture of looted sylvan equipment together with their own more traditional Dwarrow gear, giving them a mismatched choice of tools.

Dwarrow wildlanders often prefer wild, aggressive combat styles, relying on dual weapons or two-handed greatsabers and axes. The Dwarrow Greatsaber is a lethal weapon consisting of a forward-curved, double-edged sword, able to be used either like a traditional saber or with its blade reversed, dishing out blows with the scything trailing edge of their sword.

Wildlanders will usually begin a battle harrying their opponent with compact recurve bows and javelins before closing to melee, preferring ambush tactics to direct battle.

Dwarrow Monster Hunter

Abilities and Equipment

Dwarrow monster hunters favor powerful weapons able to penetrate deep within an enemy and keep them at bay, owing to the nature of their foes. Long slender spears, estoc's, and scythes are typical, though the dwarrow greatsaber is also a frequent choice.

The armor and weapons of monster hunters is variable in quality; they may be simple and mundane should a hunter be starting, but if it should be an adventurer from a noble family or a veteran monster hunter they likely are equipped with powerful enchanted weapons and lamellar or partial plate armor, forged by master Dwarrow artisans.

Those monster hunters who live long enough are usually quite skilled and experienced. Noble adventurers may have been tutored at length in exotic combat styles, but many monster hunters were simply adventurers who got lucky in their first encounter. Dwarrow adventurers, still, usually have at least a modicum of professional training, enough to put them above most infantry.

The Dwarrow underground, as well as the mist-enwreathed Hyatic mountains to the east, are places of constant danger. Reavers, basilisks, and other savage creatures are found in these places, things more befitting the heartlands than one of the outer kingdoms.

Owing to the dwarrows industrious and adventurous nature, these powerful beasts are targetted by hunters seeking wealth and glory. Scales, teeth, bones, and leather from such creatures are quite valuable, especially to the Dwarrow who favor exotic components for their legendary craftsmanship.

Those who live long enough to be termed monster hunters are as a result quite well equipped, often with magical weapons and armor. Many have customized their own equipment with trophies from past battles.

These monster hunters are a point of some contention to some among the Dwarrow, who believe their talents would be better put to use fighting more humanoid enemies.

Dwarrow Urban Infantry

Abilities and Equipment

Dwarrow urban infantry typically favor swordstaves, halberds, and billhooks. straight side-swords or sabers as backup weapons are typical, and some urban infantry are equipped with thrusting swords and bucklers instead.

Urban infantry are well schooled in the arts of war, but primarily in formation combat. Reasonably skilled and well disciplined, they still lack the individual prowess of a true warrior.

For armor they usually have heavy scale armor or munitions plate, easily mass produced by the Dwarrow and providing cost-effective yet effective protection. This armor does hamper the dwarrow's natural agility however, as it is not perfectly fit for each individual soldier.

Infantry from the Dwarrow cities in the Adurani Penninsula, Dwarrow Urban Infantry are professional soldiers with munition armor and weaponry. They typically are well protected by munition plate or heavy scale armor, providing excellent protection against sylvan archers.

Fighting primarily defensively, urban infantry favor swordstaves, halberds, and billhooks. straight side-swords or sabers as backup weapons are typical, and some urban infantry are equipped with thrusting swords or recurve bows instead. Generally, though they favor polearms for their reach and flexibility, they also favor weapons suitable for fighting in close quarters, as they often are called to do defending mountain passes or small caves.

Dwarrow urban infantry necessarily fight best as cohesive units, relying on their armor and cover for protection from missiles, while their flexible polearms make them more than a match for even elite infantry. If caught out in the open, however, they are not the most flexible of units and are vulnerable to flanking action or artillery.
